Mainstream fitness catching up

01physed.190We've known this for a long time, but The New York Times is finally getting up to speed. In a piece "How to Fix Bad Ankles," author Gretchen Reynolds reviews the studies and evidence and finds that balance training can both prevent and heal ankle injuries. It's a well-written piece and is good for beginners, but it's also an example of how slow the fitness industry is to wake up to basic physiological realities. Functional coaches have known about proprioception and balance training for a long time now. So long in fact that it really should be standard fare in every physical training program. This is really old news. (If you watch the video clip, be sure to note that the subject is BAREFOOT. An essential point, not mentioned in the article itself!)
